CASE STUDY #131

A Major Sports Organization “Lifts and Shifts” its Global Headquarters to an Entirely New City

Challenge

Moving the worldwide headquarters of a large enterprise hundreds of miles away presents significant challenges. However, the leaders of this professional sports association embraced this strategic decision as an opportunity to create a modern and innovative facility, in alignment with their vision of enhancing membership experiences within the sport. The Baghera Group (TBG) was referred to the Head of Risk Management, based on its deep understanding of professional sports environments and senior expertise in security risk management, especially technical security domains such as building security, building access, and guest and visitor management, as well as special event protocols and procedures.

As construction of the new headquarters neared completion, TBG was commissioned to conduct a Strategic Security Risk Assessment that included six core areas of focus (building security, building access, guest and visitor management, organizational safety and security, special events protocols and procedures, and safety and emergency training for staff). TBG was asked to assess the existing installation, identify any gaps or vulnerabilities, review the processes currently in place, and provide recommendations on improving the measures protecting the facility and its staff, guests, and members.

Action

As organizations embark on building or renovating their spaces, they must navigate the intricate relationship between evolving security best practices and technological advancements. Innovation in security technologies can move faster than it takes to design and construct a major project – which poses challenges in continuously tracking and integrating these advancements into building plans. TBG recognized the importance of this dynamic and conducted a thorough walkthrough to validate the overall design.

It identified key areas, such as the C-suite, entrance lobby, and shipping and receiving areas, where enhanced security measures could be beneficial. Through extensive interviews, gap analysis, and careful consideration of the facility's existing condition and the association’s corporate culture, TBG compiled dozens of actionable recommendations in its final report that collectively helped ensure that, upon completion, the facility aligned with the latest innovations in security technology.

Impact

Many of TBG’s recommendations continue to be implemented. Pleased with the assessment’s outcome, and acknowledging TBG’s guidance that some recommendations would require longer implementation timelines, planning and investment, the Head Risk Management and the Director of Operations requested additional support. TBG created a three-phased strategic roadmap that prioritized risk against level of effort and investment for implementation. TBG also created and executed the organization’s first table-top exercise as well as a security training program for the entire organization.
